Delano was born in Shoreham, Vermont in 1809 and moved to Mt. Vernon, Ohio at the age of 8.
From 1826 to 1830 he was prosecuting attorney for Knox county. In 1844 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, serving 1 term.
Later he served in Congress from 1864 to 1869. In 1869 and 1870, Delano was Commissioner of Internal Revenue. Lastly he was Secretary of Interior from 1870 to 1875. Due to corruption, Columbus Delano resigned. Moving back to Mount Vernon, Delano served in various capacities.
