cedar Hill Cemetery's Haunted Spots

Located in Newark, Ohio, Cedar Hill Cemetery is an older medium sized cemetery. There are two spots that are reputed to be haunted.

First off is the Baker Mausoleum.

Story on this one is that you are supposed to hold your ear up against the door and hear screaming and voices. Never have heard anything the times I've visited. Was actually more worried about getting tetanus from the rusty door. It's also referred to as the asylum.

There is a weeping lady in front. Various family members names are carved on the front and sides of the asylum. First time I was there, the windows were busted out. Last time I was there, the windows had been replaced.

Second spot is the baby marker.

Legend has it that if you stare at the baby for at least a minute, look away then back at the baby, the eyes are supposed to be looking in a different direction. Have never had the baby look in a different direction. It makes for a good story though.

Chic Harley - Union Cemetery

Born in Chicago in 1895, Chic moved with his family to Columbus when he was 12 years old. His first name was Charles, Chic comes from his hometown of Chicago.

Harley played in 1916, 1917 and 1919. 1918 he was a private in the U.S. Army during World War 1. He was an All American the 3 years he played. Racked 23 touchdowns in a total of 24 games played. In 1951 he was elected to the first College Football Hall of Fame class.

Located in Union Cemetery (New Union on Olentangy River Road near East North Broadway) in Section 6, Lot 25, Grave 2 is Harley's markers. Above is Harley's military marker.

Above is the big marker. It faces the main road and isn't far from it either. On April 29th, 2014, this is how it was decorated.

Chic did have a contract to get 1/3rd of team ownership of the Decatur Staleys/Chicago Staleys which are now the Chicago Bears. During a physical it was discovered Chic had Dementia praecox which voided his contract. Harley was ultimately confined to VA Hospital in Danville, Illinois. He remained there almost till the day he died. Harley did make an appearance at a Buckeyes football game in 1949.

For those interested, there is a book available on Chic.

Woody Hayes - Union Cemetery

Union Cemetery, Columbus Ohio. Section 12

Anybody who has ever lived in Columbus, probably has heard of Woody Hayes. Hayes was the head coach of the OSU Buckeyes football team from 1951 to 1978. He was previously the head coach at Denison from 1946 to 1948 and at Miami (Ohio) from 1949 to 1950.

Any coach in Ohio State University football history is compared to him. At OSU he had a record of 205 wins, 61 losses and 10 ties. Overall his record is 238 wins, 72 losses and 10 ties.

Hayes lost his job at OSU after the incident at the 1978 Gator Bowl. Hayes punched Charlie Bauman of the Clemson Tigers.

Some decorations at various times.

John Dillinger - Crown Hill Cemetery

Located in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana in Section 44 is a unassuming family plot.

Maybe the marker has a familiar name on it. It's because he had a son that did become famous.

The much more famous John Dillinger. Son of John & Mollie Dillinger. Lizzie Dillinger was the stepmother.

Still can't quite place the name?
At one point he was the most wanted man in the U.S. Dillinger and his gang did bank robberies in Indiana, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin. He was involved in a well known shoot out at the Little Bohemia Lodge. Dillinger was the subject of the movie Public Enemies with Johnny Depp as Dillinger.

Cy Young - Peoli Cemetery

Peoli Cemetery, Peoli Ohio. Peoli is one of those blink and you miss towns in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. It probably has about 10 houses total. It pretty much is in Amish country. Nothing to see other than cows and farmland.

Technically where Cy Young is buried would be a graveyard since it's attached to a church. The most famous permanent resident is Cy Young.

Young started with the Cleveland Spiders in 1890 and ended his career in 1911 with the Boston Rustlers, now the Atlanta Braves. He holds the records for most wins (511) and losses (316). Most people would think he would have been in the 1st induction class of the HOF in 1936. No, he was inducted in 1937. Walter Johnson and Christy Mathewson were inducted before Young, even though they had less wins.

There is a bench out in front of the graveyard. Photographed about half the graveyard and I went to go sit on the bench. About the same time a horse and buggy came by with an Amish guy driving and a couple kids in the back, The Amish guy was kinda looking over and waved. I waved back and smiled. The kids were giving the stink eye which I thought was funny.
