Billy Evans - Knollwood Cemetery

Knollwood is 96 acres in size and has one of the largest mausoleums in Ohio.

Billy was born in Chicago, Illinois and moved to Youngstown, Ohio as a child. In 1906, Evans became the youngest Major League umpire at the age of 22. From 1906 to 1927, Evans umpired 3,319 games in the American League. He retied in 1927 and became GM of the Cleveland Indians. Evans remained with the Indians until 1935. After he left, Billy became chief scout of the Boston Red Sox. Evans left the Red Sox in 1940 after a disagreement over Pee Wee Reese was sold to the Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1941 he was GM of the Cleveland Rams (now the St. Louis Rams) American football team. Late December 1942 he then on to become president of the Southern Association, a baseball minor league. Evans stayed at that position for the next four years. Finally Evans became GM of the Detroit Tigers. In 1973, Billy became the third umpire elected to the Baseball Hall Of Fame.
