Bessie Tomlin (1937 Flood victim) - Greenlawn Cemetery

b. Sept. 12, 1910 / d. Jan. 25, 1937 / Inscription: “The only victim
in Portsmouth, Ohio of the Great Ohio River Flood in 1937 when
the river crested at 74 feet. Mrs. Tomlins rescue boat overturned
at 10th and Waller Sts., but she was able to hold 18 month old
Alberta out of the water until Fireman Lt. Walter Chick could grab here, then
Mrs. Tomlin disappeared beneath the water.” / “Donated by the citizens of
Scioto County and Scioto County Historical Society – 2002” / “Greater love
hath no man than this that he lay down his life for his friends. – John 15:13”
