Annie Oakley & Frank Butler - Brock Cemetery



Brock Cemetery in Greenville, Ohio is the final resting spot for Annie Oakley and her husband Frank Butler.

Greenville, Ohio is located in Darke County, which borders Indiana. Some people may know that in 1795 the Treaty of Greenville was signed. The treaty established what was Indian territory and what wasn't. It included quite a bit of Ohio, Chicago and even Detroit. 





Born Phoebe Ann Moses in 1860 not too far outside of Greenville, she was the sixth of seven children. Her father, Jacob Moses died in 1866 at age 65 from complications related to exposure. Due to her shooting, Oakley was known as Little Sure Shot.She is known for working with Buffalo Bill and his show Buffalo Bill's Wild West And Congress of Rough Riders of the World. The show gave birth to the name of the Rough Riders, known for having Theodore Roosevelt.

Frank Butler was born in Ireland in 1852. He moved to the states at the age of 13. Butler met Oakley at a shooting competition in Cincinnati. They married in 1875. In 1884 they joined the Sells Brothers circus which was based out of Columbus, Ohio. Reportedly after Oakley died, Butler stopped eating and died 18 days later.


Oakley's and Butler's markers in Brock Cemetery. Their markers aren't hard to find in the cemetery. It isn't a very big cemetery and there are a few signs near the markers.
