Born in 1860 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Bernard Kroger wa the 5th of 10 kids. Kroger worked for Great Northern and Pacific Tea Company and then Imperial Tea Company. He Eventually started his own company named The Great Western Tea Company.

In 1902 the company was renamed Kroger Grocery and Baking Company. Then it became just Kroger. By the 1920's, the chain grew to over 5,500 stores. Bernard Kroger died in 1938 from a heart attack.
