Charles Grant - Spring Grove Cemetery

Spring Grove Cemetery
Section 68, grave 417
Cincinnati, Ohio

Charlie Grant was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1874. Grant started out with the Page Fence Giants in 1896. From 1899 to 1901, Grant played for the Columbia Giants based out of Chicago. In 1901, Grant was spotted by John McGraw, manager of the American League Baltimore Orioles. McGraw tried to pass Grant off as Cherokee named Charlie Tokohama. The plan fell through when the Orioles played a game in Chicago and some of Grant's darker skinned friends presented him with a flower bouquet.

Grant played with various teams off and on until 1916. While working as a janitor at a apartment building in 1932, a car blew a tire and hit and killed grant.
