Hugh Boyle Ewing
10/31/1826 to 6/30/1905

Born into the well known Ewing family of Ohio, Hugh Boyle Ewing was born in Lancaster, Ohio in 1826. He was the foster brother and eventual brother in law of William Tecumseh Sherman. Boyle practiced law in St. Louis from 1854 to 1856 and moved to Leavenworth, Kansas. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was appointed brigadier-inspector of Ohio volunteers by Governor William Dennison. He went on to be colonel of the 30th OVI. In 1862 he was promoted to brigadier general. After the war he was ambassador to the Netherlands.
