Mia Zapata was born in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1984, she enrolled in Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. While there the Gits were formed in 1986. The band relocated to Seattle, Washington. In the early morning of July 7, 1993, Zapata was raped and murdered. In 2003, Jesus Mezquia was arrested for the murder. DNA from a saliva sample kept in cold storage was a match.
