Adrian "Addie" Joss was born in Woodland, Wisconsin in 1880. In 1900 and 1901, Joss played with the Toledo Mud Hens. 1902 he signed with the Cleveland Bronchos (later the Naps and then the Indians). He went 17-13, with a 2.77 era in his first season. in 1904, Joss got Malaria and he missed several games. As a result, Joss went 14-10 for the season. From 1905 to 1908 he had at least 20 wins a season. October 2, 1908 threw a perfect game against the Chicago White Sox. Addie threw a second no hitter on April 20, 1910. He became the only Major League pitcher to throw a no hitter against the same team.

Joss played 9 years and compiled a record of 160 wins against 97 losses. His 1.89 era is second overall. First is Ed Walsh, with 1.82.

Joss died in 1911 from Tuberculous meningitis before the season started. On July 24, 1911 a benefit game was played for Joss' widow. An American League all star team against the Naps/Indians. If you notice, Ty Cobb, seated 3rd from right is wearing a Cleveland uniform. His Tigers uniform was lost and had to wear a borrowed uniform. Since the Hall of Fame requires 10 years minimum playing time, a resolution was passed to allow Joss to become up for election. In 1977, he was elected.
