Powel Crosley Jr. - Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati Ohio

Spring Grove Cemetery, section 117 lot 75, Cincinnati, Ohio

Above is the marker for the Crosley family in section 117.

In amongst the markers is one for Powel Crosley Jr. Prominent in both Ohio and the world of Baseball, he had his hands involved in quite a few things over his life.

Let's see, he was involved in making radios, cars, fridges and airplanes. Crosley was also involved in Baseball. As owner of the Cincinnati Reds, the first major league night game was held at Crosley Field on May 24, 1935.

Crosley had become the largest radio maker in the world during the 1920's. In 1922 WLW was started by the Crosley Corporation. In 1934, WLW had a 500,000 watt transmitter. Crosley sold WLW to AVCO in 1945.

Powel Crosely bought in the Reds in 1934 and was owner until he died in 1961. The stadium was renamed Crosley Field.

Crosley also produced cars, which one of which is the Hotshot above. The car the company produced in 1939 had a 80 inch wheelbase, a 2 cylinder engine and weighed 925 pounds. It sold for between $325 and $350. Imagine buying a car for that price today.
