John Milton Hay - Lake View Cemetery

Located in Lake View Cemetery, section 10 in Cleveland Ohio.


The marker is of the archangel Michael. It was designed by the sculptor James Earl Fraser.


Fraser also the Indian Head/Buffalo nickel. It was minted from 1913 to 1938.


Hay was born in Salem, Indiana in 1838. He was recommended to become an assistant secretary to Abraham Lincoln by John Nicolay. Hay served as secretary until 1864. Nicolay and Hay wrote a 10 volume biography of Lincoln. From 1865 to 1868 he was secretary of legation in Paris and Madrid. In 1870 he became editor of the New York Tribune. In 1878, he became assistant secretary of state. 1897 he became an ambassador to the U.K. and then secretary of state in 1898 and served until he died.


Clara Stone Hay was John Hay's wife. Their son, Adelbert died in 1901 when he fell from a window in New Haven, Connecticut.
