Billy Southworth - Green Lawn Cemetery

William Harold "Billy" Southworth was born in Harvard, Nebraska in 1893. Southworth was raised in Columbus, Ohio. His first baseball contract was in the Ohio State League on the Portsmouth team when he was 19. He played in one game for the Cleveland Indians in 1913 and 60 games in 1915. After playing for the Birmingham Barons in 1917 and part of 1918, Billy went up to the Pirates for 64 games in 1918. On the major league level Southworth played for the Cleveland Indians, Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Giants and St Louis Cardinals. His playing career ended with a respectable .297 batting average and 1296 hits.
Southworth also had a managerial career with the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Braves. Managed 4 National League pennant winners in 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1948. Of those two were world series winners in 1942 and 1944.
Southworth was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008.
Billy Southworth did have a son that played in some Minor League Baseball.

In the section directly facing his father is Billy Southworth Jr's grave. Junior was born in Portland, Oregon in 1917 when his father was playing for the Portland Beavers. Southworth Jr played minor league ball for the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Philles. December 12th, 1941 he joined the United States Army Air Force, forerunner of the current Air Force. He earned a Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal during his 25 bombing missions. Southworth lost his life during a training exercise in a B-29 when it crashed into Flushing Bay near Queens.
