John Rockefeller - Lake View Cemetery

Located in Lake View Cemetery, section 10 in Cleveland Ohio is the Rockefeller family plot. The obelisk is 65' and weighs 357,680 pounds. It is the largest piece of granite used for a memorial.

Located near the obelisk is the marker from John Rockefeller, a founder of Standard Oil. Born in Richford, New York, Rockefeller moved to Strongsville, Ohio in 1853. Rockefeller got involved in the oil buisness in 1866 when his brother William opened a refinery in Cleveland. At the time Cleveland was a big oil producer. Standard Oil was founded in 1870. Through questionable business dealings, Standard Oil became the biggest oil company. Eventually Standard Oil was broken up the Sherman Antitrust act in the early 1910's. The Sherman Antitrust act is named after John Sherman, brother of William Tecumseh Sherman. John Sherman is buried in Mansfield, Ohio.
