Alfred Goshorn, while not the most well known person nowadays, played a pivotal role in baseball. Goshorn was born in Cincinnati in 1833. In 1857 he earned a law degree from Marietta College. During the civil war he was a captain in the 137 O.V.I. (Ohio Volunteer Infantry). In July of 1866 he became president of the Cincinnati Base Ball Club. Yes, at one point baseball was two words. Goshorn held the post until April, 1869.
The month after Goshorn left the post, the club became the Cincinnati Red Stockings.
Alfred Goshorn also was the 1st director of the Cincinnati Museum of Art. He also help run various expositions around the country, including the centennial exposition in 1876.
Goshorn died in 1902.
