John Sherman was born in Lancaster, Ohio, along with his older brother. After his father died, John went to live with a relative in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Sherman moved to Mansfield in 1840 to study law. He was a U.S. Representative from 1855 to 1861. A Senator from 1861 to 1877 and again from 1881 to 1897. United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1877 to 1881. United States Secretary of State from 1897 to 1898. He was chief author of the Antitrust act.
