Sam Leever - Goshen Cemetery

Lever was born on December 23, 1871 in Goshen, Ohio. He earned his nickname "The Goshen Schoolmaster" because he taught school for 7 years before his baseball career. His major League career started on May 26, 1898 with the Pittsburgh (Pittsburg at the time) and went to September 26, 1910. Spent his entire career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Leever went 194-100 with a 2.47 ERA. Leever also racked up 847 strikeouts in his career. While a member of the Pirates, Leever was part of the 1901-1903 and 1909 National League pennant winners. He played in the 1st modern World Series in 1903 against the Boston Red Sox. Red Sox were the underdogs and won that year. In 1909 the Pirates won the World Series against the Detroit Tigers, led by Ty Cobb.
