Ovid Wellford Smith - Green Lawn Cemetery

Ovid Wellford Smith is one of 5 Medal Of Honor recipients buried at Green Lawn Cemetery. Of the 5, two are from the Civil War, two are from the Indian Wars and one is from World War 1. At the time of his enlistment, Smith was 16 years old but gave his age as 22. He enlisted under the name of James Smith due to not having his parents blessing. He enlisted in Circleville, Ohio in Company I, 2 OVI. Smith was awarded the Medal Of Honor for actions involved with the Andrews Raid. Smith didn't actually help with the hijacking of the General. The morning of the raid, he actually overslept. Smith enlisted in a Confederate unit to avoid suspicion. Smith was also held at Swims Jail. Smith was able to escape back to the Union. For what he endured is why he was awarded the medal on July 6, 1864. In 1868, Ovid Wellford Smith died of Pneumonia.
