Eliot Ness - Lake View Cemetery

There are certain people that a lot of legends are based on.One of those people would be Eliot Ness. Famous for being one of the Untouchables. A group in Chicago that went after Al Capone. Born in 1903 in Chicago, Ness joined the U.S. Treasury department Bureau of Prohibition in 1927. After being assigned to various spots after prohibition, Ness was hired as Cleveland's safety director in 1935.

Al Capone was probably the most famous person that Ness went after.

Some people will know Ness from the Untouchables TV show that starred Robert Stack. Others will know him from the movie with Kevin Costner.

Still others will know him from the Great Lakes Brewing amber lager. Great Lakes brewpub is located in a tavern that Eliot Ness used to go to.

Located in section 7 in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland. The marker is technically not a grave marker but is actually a cenotaph. A cenotaph is just a memorial for somebody whose body isn't present at the particular location. It could be a marker for a body that was never found after a plane crash or might be buried elsewhere. In Ness' case, he was cremated and the ashes were spread on the little lake near the marker. Just up the road in section 9 is the Haserot angel.

For those interested there are some books available that concern Eliot Ness.

In The Wake Of The Butcher: Cleveland's Torso Murders by James Jesse Badal.

Though Murder Has No Tongue: The Lost Victim Of Cleveland's Mad Butcher by James Jessen Badal.

Both books concern the Mad Butcher/Torso Murderer. Both are good for people interested in serial killers. The case lead to Ness' ousting as Cleveland's safety director.

Eliot Ness: The Rise And Fall Of An American Hero by Douglas Perry
