Hank Gowdy - Union Cemetery

Henry Gowdy, aka Harry & Hank, was born in Columbus Ohio in 1889. Gowdy started out with the New York Giants in 1910 and was traded to the Boston Braves in 1911. He was a member of the 1914 Miracle Braves. The boston Braves went from last place in July to 1st by the end the season. The Braves beat the Philadelphia A's in the World Series. Hank Gowdy was the first Major League player to enlist in the military when the U.S. entered World War 1. He also enlisted in World War 2. He's thought to be the only major leaguer to enlist in both wars. Overall he played 17 big league seasons between 1910 and 1930.


1940 Play Ball baseball card. Gum Inc. produced the Play Ball sets from 1939 to 1941. Eventually the company changed it's name to Bowman and issued baseball card sets from 1948 to 1955. Topps bought out the company in 1955 and revived the name Bowman in 1989 for a series of sets.
